Why is maternal health so important and what impact does it have on the life and health of mums and babies? How can we protect women from needless death? Millenium Development Goal 5 is to improve maternal health and reduce by three quarters the proportion of women dying in childbirth.

A brand new smile

This beautiful little girl in Brazil was too shy to smile for the camera and hid her cleft lip behind her teddy. A volunteer at Operation Smile caught the moment she saw her new smile for the first time, still sore and swollen from surgery. Her eyes say it all.
