In Western culture death is often feared. The industry of denying the aging process and the proclivity of the baby boomer generation to 'spend the inheritance' and live like it's 1999 is using up the earth's resources at an alarming rate.

Yet we know that all things must end and that change is the way of things. We all grow older. We all die. What we don't often refer to in our youth centric culture is that while difficult, death can be a beautiful thing. To borrow from Disney, the circle of life rules us all.

This poetic and lyrical short video on the afterlife of a whale explores this truth with beauty and sensitivity.

Director-animator duo Sharon Shattuk and Flora Lichtman, better known as Sweet Fern Productions, collaborated with Radiolab's Lynn Levy on 'Whale Fall' - a examination of how a whale can nourish an eco-system for 50 – 75 years after it's death.

Watch the video to find a new beauty in the impermanence of things.
