Striving for a shared city

Since 2008, dozens of Palestinian residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah have been evicted from their homes and displaced by Israeli settlers. With Israeli courts largely backing the settlers' claims, hundreds of others now face the same threat.

See this this young woman? she is pregnant but if she lives in Sub-Saharan Africa there is a 1 in 30 chance she will die in childbirth. Why is maternal health so important and what impact does it have on the life and health of mums and babies? How can we protect women from needless death? Millenium Development Goal 5 is to improve maternal health and reduce by three quarters the proportion of women dying in childbirth.

Poverty inspires justice

A brand new smile

This beautiful little girl in Brazil was too shy to smile for the camera and hid her cleft lip behind her teddy. A volunteer at Operation Smile caught the moment she saw her new smile for the first time, still sore and swollen from surgery. Her eyes say it all.
